An Operational Look at Training in a GPS-Jammed Environment with MAK ONE
By Ross Uhler, Director of Strategic Business Development and former Air Force Lt. Col.
Aircraft and precision weapons rely on GPS as part of their integrated navigation systems. As a C-130 navigator, our systems used a combination of GPS, INS, doppler, and my own calculations to confirm the aircraft’s position. However, we had no way to train in a GPS jamming environment to learn how first to identify jamming was occurring and then adjust our navigation systems accordingly.
With the new release of MAK ONE 2025, our customer can now include GPS jamming effects on both aircraft and guided munitions. The challenge is determining how best to test and train on this complex navigation system when GPS is being jammed. Jim Kogler, Vice President of Products for MAK, recently published an article discussing the details behind MAK’s GPS jamming capability. This article will touch on some practical applications of this capability.
With the new release of MAK ONE, MAK customers will be able to see the effects of GPS jamming in a variety of air operations, and will greatly improve customers’ ability to test current and new integrated navigations systems for weapon systems. Operators can train in a GPS jamming environment to develop better Tactics Techniques and Procedures (TTPs), to counter these effects. Run it in MAK ONE first, create TTPs, then run it in training. This enables our customers to identify GPS jamming early and respond quickly to ensure the success of their civil or military operations.
