What's New with VR-Vantage 2.0?

This major release represents a huge leap forward in both the performance and visual quality of VR-Vantage IG - with upgrades to nearly every one of the product’s main components. VR-Vantage 2.0 includes a brand new shader infrastructure, dynamic lighting engine, real-time full-scene shadows, upgraded vegetation, environment, and dynamic ocean models, a robust CIGI implementation, and much more. With VR-Vantage 2.0, we’ve achieved our goal of delivering game-like visual quality in a high-performance, 60Hz immersive environment.

Whether you’re delivering a flight simulator, driving trainer, naval application, or first-person gaming application, you can now use VR-Vantage with confidence to provide beautiful out-the-window visuals, as well as real-time camera and sensor feeds.

Concurrently with VR-Vantage 2.0, we have also released SensorFX 2.0 - the newest version of the physics-based sensor simulation and visualization module for VR-Vantage.

While there are too many new capabilities to enumerate, here are some key highlights:

Performance:

  • Advanced optimization of the graphics engine to achieve smooth 60Hz rendering
  • Hardware instancing of entities - hundreds of moving models with a single draw call
  • Faster loading and rendering of terrain - including streaming terrain data
  • Hundreds of thousands of trees, buildings, and props
  • Integrated function profiler to help user identify bottlenecks, content optimizations, etc.

Lighting and Shadows:

  • Forward+ lighting allows hundreds of dynamic light sources to cast light on scene geometry with minimal performance cost
  • Real-time full-scene dynamic shadows using cascading shadow map technique
  • GUI control of cinematic style - adjust ambient and diffuse light levels
  • Specular maps, reflection maps, bump maps, and ambient occlusion maps
  • Emissivity maps - random windows on buildings lit based on time of day

Sky and Environment:

  • Infinite cloud planes and volumetric clouds
  • Lens flare
  • Adjustable wind speed and direction affects ocean, flags, wind socks, smoke, etc.
  • Screen effects when raindrops and ocean splash hit camera
  • Reflections of sun, sky, and clouds on dynamic ocean

Human Characters:

  • Upgrade to DI-Guy 13, with enhanced DI-Guy integration
  • Minimized foot sliding and other smoothing / distributed simulation issues
  • Better interoperability with DI-Guy Scenario
  • Many more top-quality skinned characters
  • Better lighting, highlights, and other elements of visual quality

Vegetation:

  • Upgrade to latest SpeedTree
  • Higher-quality, procedurally-generated vegetation
  • Instanced billboards for distant trees to support much higher vegetation density
  • Grass, shrubs, and other low-lying plant coverage

Dynamic Ocean:

  • Significant visual quality and performance improvements
  • High-resolution rotor-wash, better foam, and more realistic wakes which support smooth turns for ships
  • Double-refraction to visualize light entering and reflecting back through the water
  • Adjustable ocean geometry resolution
  • Much better water visuals when viewed from high altitude
  • Realistic surf patterns along coastlines
  • Crepuscular rays for sub-surface scenes
  • Tidal streams wakes on buoys to model tidal currents

Navigational Marks (for air and sea):

  • Procedural generation of navigational marks from feature data
  • S-57 naval chart import, and automatic rendering of buoys with correct colors, numbers (or letters), and lighting
  • Buoys are correctly placed and lit while observing time-of-day (lights off in the day) and seasonal variations
  • Automatic placement of wind socks, flags, and other wind markers based on feature data - animated based on correct environmental conditions

Procedural Terrain / Texture Synthesis:

  • Automatic generation of high-quality natural-looking terrain for the entire world
  • Synthetic imagery generated by blending layers of geo-typical textures and bump maps based on coarse land-use data, and slope and elevation heuristics
  • Generated textures draped on geo-specific elevation data to create a plausible natural environment without requiring geo-specific imagery, and without baked-in artifacts

CIGI:

  • Support for the latest version of the CIGI standard (3.3.1) for host-IG control
  • Nearly every VR-Vantage capability can now be driven from CIGI
  • Support for custom CIGI extensions

Multi-channel and Display Systems:

  • Full synchronization across seamless multi-channel displays
  • Built-in support for Oculus Rift virtual reality displays

SensorFX:

  • SensorFX physics-based sensor module has been upgraded to latest versions of JRM’s SIGSIM / SENSIM SDKs
  • Fully compatible with all new capabilities of VR-Vantage 2.0
  • Automatic sensorization of SpeedTrees, DI-Guy characters, SilverLining environment, and Triton ocean
  • Material classification on demand - support for automatic material classification of certain terrain types based on feature data
  • Active thermal regions (engines, exhaust, etc.) - with automatic response to engine state published by VR-Forces
