Weather

Mark Twain said that he once counted 136 different kinds of weather inside of 24 hours. We understand that weather conditions vary widely around the world and sometimes even around your own neighborhood. Building on the localized fog and sandstorms, we have added the ability to visualize localized rain areas of varying intensities. You can now experience sunshine and clear skies in one area and intense rain shafts just a few kilometers away.

User Experience

VR-Vantage is designed to allow you better visualize and understand the world around you. A ship’s navigator will use a chart to plan the ship’s transit path, but also needs the ability to look out of the bridge windows to use land markers and terrain to react to real world conditions. With the new 2D View Layer option, you can choose to view a specific osgEarth map layer in a 2D Observer View for planning while simultaneously having an immersive 3D visualization of that terrain.

Having the ability to visualize your world from the bottom of the ocean to the top of the atmosphere is no good if the interface for it doesn’t help the user understand what they are seeing. We keep focus on building new - or improving existing - features that improve the user experience and will be introducing some exciting changes in the sprint release. Some of the work that has been done to lay the groundwork for the next release is available now, including:

  • Setting ground fog and patch fog colors using CIGI
  • Setting rain and snow accumulation using CIGI
  • Improved terrain saved view loading
