Windows 7 and RTI slow down

Recently we have been seeing widespread Windows 7 adoption by our customers, we are internally moving to it too. However, we have noticed some very strange behavior on Windows 7 with some of our applications.

The most significant problem we have run into is extremely slow startup times for the MAK RTI. This problem is usually obvious; the RTI Assistant will take between 3 and 15 minutes to load.

While its loading you will just see a blank console window. HLA Federates may take an equally long time to load because they are waiting for the RTI.

This problem seems to occur first with RTI 4.X, but then will repeat with all versions of the RTI. Once the problem occurs it will continue to occur on that machine for all RTI versions. However, it won't occur on every machine, just some of them, and only Windows 7 machines.

We tracked the problem down to the system call "getaddrinfo()" which is taking about one minute to return when passed the local machine's hostname. We believe this is actually a Microsoft defect, but have come up with a code based workaround which resolves the problem.

We now have a patch which fixes the issue. This patch is wire compatible with the 4.0.1 series, so you only need to update on machines with Windows7 installed.

Please note: When you install the new package, it will try to run your OLD RTI Assistant to shut down any running RTI Components. This will freeze because it runs the old version of the RTI Assistant which hangs. Just close this window, shut down all RTI components and then finish your install.
