Chief Engineer

VT MAK is looking for a Chief Engineer to support our Synthetic Training Environment (STE) Common Synthetic Environment (CSE) program for the Army. The CSE will serve as the platform enabler of STE that will allow units and soldiers to conduct realistic, multi-echelon, collective training anywhere in the world.

The Chief Engineer will collaborate with and lead teams of software engineers, subject matter experts, and support staff to guide the development and maintenance of the system. He or she will also lead activities to develop and integrate new and enhanced capabilities within a large, complex training network that will provide robust, realistic, and cost-effective training. Primary responsibilities include:

• Understand and interpret modelling and simulation system requirements
• Demonstrate ability to develop solutions that scale to enterprise-wide usage
• Lead, educate, and train engineers
• Lead team of diverse engineers and subcontractors in all phases of development lifecycle
• Work with experienced software engineers to develop and implement solutions
• Conduct technical discussions with customers
• Lead update of new capabilities into enhanced system architectures
• Provide leadership, technical direction, and guidance to engineer teams and support staff
• Act as primary technical liaison between customer and program management and execution team
• Liaise and coordinate program engineering efforts between MAK's Orlando and Cambridge development teams
• Work directly with customers and represent engineering / technical viewpoint
• Develop, maintain, and ensure compliance for system and subsystem requirements
• Prepare for and lead both internal and customer design reviews
• Work with industry and government stakeholders in resolution of engineering systems issues

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree required; masters preferred
• Deep domain knowledge of U.S. Army warfare training systems
• Minimum 15 years in modelling and simulation with Live Virtual Constructive training, training architecture, and weapons / warfighter training
• Ability to obtain a Secret level security clearance; active Secret or higher clearance a plus
• Experience with architecture frameworks such as DoDAF, model development in standard architecting tools such as Enterprise Architect, and systems engineering tools such as Jama
• Experience in development, integration, and testing of large scale, complex systems in ambiguous and dynamic environments with aggressive deadlines
• Experience developing technical baselines (requirements / architecture), leading development teams, and developing and reviewing Engineering Change Requests
• Experience leading technical Analysis of Alternatives (AoA) and / or Trade Studies, performing risk and opportunity analyses, and tracking and mitigating risks
• Experience developing policies and procedures
• Demonstrated strong ownership, self-motivation, and ability to work both autonomously and with geographically dispersed teams
• Strong problem-solving abilities
• Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and independently
• Strong verbal and written communication skills in English
• Defense contractor or military experience preferred
