Senior Technical Writer

MAK has an immediate need for a Senior Technical Writer to lead our technical communication process.

This is an outstanding opportunity to join a dynamic simulation software products and services company as Senior Technical Writer.  Based in the Alewife area of Cambridge, we have been a leader in our industry for 28 years.

VT MAK software has been used to develop solutions in the areas of Military Training, Air Traffic Management, Command and Control, and Homeland Security. Thousands of customers worldwide use MAK products, including the world’s ten largest defense contractors.

 

Responsibilities include:

-Work with internal teams to develop and maintain an in-depth understanding of the product line.

-Maintain, update, and expand a large documentation base as new features and products are added.

-Produce high-quality user-level documentation, including users guides, online help, and first experience guides.

-Provide guidance and support for API documentation.

-Develop example scenarios, demos, presentations, and other user-focused technical communications.

-Create tutorials to help end-users use a variety of applications.

-Maintain release-specific pages on the MAK web site.

-Assist with marketing communications.

 

An ideal candidate:

-Must be an outstanding and enthusiastic communicator.

-Has a clear and concise writing style and strong editing skills.

-Has a solid understanding of Adobe FrameMaker (particularly structured FrameMaker) and other software typically used by technical communicators.

-Possesses the ability to communicate with engineers on a superficial technical level.

-Is able to work with limited supervision, set priorities, and manage multiple release schedules.

-Exhibits a strong desire to play with software, form opinions, and work with engineering teams to understand how new software works.

-Will possess a basic understanding of HTML and computer programming, and be familiar with scripting languages (ex: perl, javascript, Auto IT, and framescript).

-Is able to travel one or two weeks a year to visit trade shows, and assist with occasional user training.

-Must have permanent work authorization in the United States.

 

Candidates need not have an engineering background or industry experience, just a strong will to learn, play, and write. Ideal candidates will have a strong desire to rewrite this job description and may wish to debate sentence diagramming.
