Building Hawaii – An Example of Integrating Open Streaming Terrain with Traditional Database Techniques

There are a lot of ways to build a terrain database for visual simulation. This webinar will step you through the process MÄK used to create a virtual Hawaii using a combination of 3D object modeling, site model integration, and streaming features from VR-TheWorld. We'll discuss the database techniques used and explain how each matched the design requirements of the Hawaii database.

We'll talk about how we used VR-TheWorld to provide the entire planet as a background; how we found source data on the internet to add high resolution elevation, imagery, and features for the island of Oahu; how we mapped the feature data to automatically generate 3D cultural models; how we added specific models to increase fidelity in the neighborhood of Moanalua, how we used the features to facilitate vehicle traffic; how we cut site models into the Honolulu Airport; and how we used imagery produced by Harris to smooth out the transition between the low resolution ocean and the high resolution Honolulu imagery.

Building a Simulation Environment for Air Traffic Management

The next generation Air Traffic Management systems are being developed in the US and Europe under the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) and Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) programs respectively. This requires significant concept development, research, engineering, validation and demonstration. All of these are being supported by simulation.

The military and other Government agencies are starting to make greater use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) that must also fly through the commercial airspace and mix with civilian air traffic. Enabling this will take several years to achieve and require significant ongoing research and development and collaborative efforts between the ATM providers, military, local agencies, and prime contractors.

What is required is a collaborative, distributed modeling and simulation environment ideal for simulating and visualizing the next generation ATM systems and airspace. VT MÄK’s suite of products can help make this a reality. This webinar will explain how MÄK’s products can help:

  • Link disparate simulations and real systems into an integrated simulation-based experimentation and integration environment;
  • Create a common synthetic environment for all participants;
  • Provide a flexible 3D visualization of the simulation from multiple different perspectives; and
  • Supplement existing simulations with representations of UAS’s, ground traffic, military aircraft and the ATM communications network.

Integrating Realistic Helicopters into Simulation

Helicopters are marvelous vehicles. No other vehicle can take off vertically, hover, bob to the left and right, spin around, fly backwards, then land in a confined area. Realistically simulating helicopters is a challenge due to the complexity of controls and flight dynamics models. How do you integrate realistic helicopter models into combat gunnery trainers, crew trainers, and pilot part-task trainers? At this webinar, MAK will show you how RT Dynamics’ RotorLib’s flight dynamics model (FDM) and intelligent controller fit into the VR-Forces simulation framework to allow three distinct levels of helicopter simulation fidelity: Autonomous flight modes suitable for air defense artillery, threat ID, and reaction to combat operations; joystick controlled flight in support of crew training, sling load, and gunner training; and interactive flight using helicopter cyclic, collective, and pedals for pilot screening or navigation, radios, and weapons training.

Simulation Architectures to Solve Real World Problems

Every simulation system has its own unique set of criteria and requirements. In each case, design and configuration trade-offs must be analyzed to determine the optimal solution. How should my host simulation communicate with my Image Generator? How do I integrate a battlefield view into my Instructor Operator Station? How is my brief/debrief station interacting with the entire simulation system? Architectures must consider every component of the simulation system to be able to deliver a fully-compliant system. This webinar works through several real world simulation architectures and breaks down the design process to help you understand the pros and cons of each approach.
