Introducing VR-TheWorld Server & VR-TheWorld Online
The World at Your Fingertips
Overview
The Modeling and Simulation world is rapidly moving toward a direct-from-source, web-services-based approach to handling terrain data. And VT MÄK is at the forefront of that transition. Coming in Q3 2010:VR-TheWorld™ Server — an open-standards-based streaming terrain server from MÄK. Preview it today by trying out VR-TheWorld Online — a MÄK-hosted online streaming terrain service that’s available for free!
The Streaming Terrain Approach
Have you ever marveled at how web-based mapping tools and “virtual globe” applications effortlessly stream terrain data from a remote server as you move about the world? No terrain databases to configure and copy around. Easily deployable applications. Immediate access to new imagery and elevation data as soon as it is added to the server. Don’t you wish it was that easy to get terrain information into your own simulation and visualization applications? Now, it can be!
Introducing VR-TheWorld Server
VR-TheWorld Server is a simple, yet powerful, web-based streaming terrain server, developed in conjunction with our technology partner, Pelican Mapping. Delivered with a global base map, you can also easily populate it with your own custom source data through a web-based interface. The server can be deployed on private, classified networks to provide streaming terrain data to a variety of simulation and visualization applications behind your firewall.
VR-TheWorld Online – Try it Today!
To allow customers to experience the streaming terrain concept, MÄK is offering an online service called VR-TheWorld Online — an instance of VR-TheWorld Server hosted in the cloud. The service is available free for use within VR-Vantage® and VR-Forces®-based applications, and for free trial use in other applications (including web apps). Point your web-browser at www.VR-TheWorld.com to browse the datasets available on the server, and to obtain information on how to connect VR-Vantage-based applications, Google Earth clients, and other TMS and WMS-compliant applications. Once you connect, your 3D world will be automatically filled with elevation data and imagery for any area of the globe as your fly through the world.
A World of Data
MÄK has seeded VR-TheWorld Online with over 4 Terabytes of global elevation and imagery data — pre-tiled for high- performance access. The VR-TheWorld Online Basemap is also available with VR-TheWorld Server:
- Global elevation – 90-meter (DTED Level 1) for the entire globe, based on the CGIAR-CSI version of NASA’s SRTM30 dataset, merged with SRTM30Plus bathymetry
- Global imagery – Landsat 7 (15m resolution for the entire globe) merged with NASA Blue Marble data (500m resolu- tion), color-corrected for seamless display, and pre-tiled to 7 mipmap levels
- Several high-resolution inset areas, ranging from 1m down to 15cm per pixel – including Boston, Washington DC, and two airport areas in Afghanistan
- Samples of 1:250,000 and 1:100,000 topographic maps in Southern California.
With VR-TheWorld Server and VR-TheWorld Online, the world is truly at your fingertips.
Commitment to Open Standards
VR-TheWorld Server is built around open standards such as WMS (Open Geospatial Consortium’s Web Mapping Service) and TMS (OSGeo’s Tile Map Service). This means that clients are not limited to MÄK’s visualization or simulation tools. Any customer or 3rd party application that supports WMS or TMS (including web apps) can access VR-TheWorld Server immediately.
A Full Spectrum of MÄK Products
In 2008, MÄK launched the VR-Vantage family of visualization applications and toolkits – some of the first vis-sim tools on the market to support the streaming terrain paradigm. In late 2009, we began to implement streaming terrain in our VR-Forces CGF, so that customers who are using streaming terrain services could achieve correlation across our full suite of simulation and visualization products. Now, with VR-TheWorld Server and VR-TheWorld Online, we offer a solution for the server side as well.
