HLA Interoperability for ArcGIS – GIS-to-Sim
System Context
ArcGIS is the premier solution for creating and deploying intelligent geographic applications. It provides the foundation for the next-generation C4I systems. Up until now, it has been unable to interoperate with HLA or DIS compliant modeling and simulation applications.
Trends
Static terrain databases have been the main approach to modeling the 3D environment since the beginning of the Modeling and Simulation industry. Meanwhile, Battle Command Systems have been built around maps and geographic information systems. As the technologies have advanced in recent years, it is now becoming possible for modeling & simulation systems to operate directly on the same geographic data used by the operational Battle Command systems.
GIS-to-SIM
MÄK GIS-to-SIM brings the power of simulation networking protocols to ESRI’s ArcGIS Geographic Information System (GIS) software suite. Now users can embed native support for Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) or High Level Architecture (HLA) into a ArcGIS development. The seamless integrations of GIS-to-SIM and ArcGIS eliminates the divide between the simulation and operational domains.
GIS-to-SIM is based on VR-Link®, MÄK’s industry-leading toolkit for simulation networking applications. GIS-to-SIM combines the advantages of both tools by wrapping and extending the functionality of VR-Link within the development architecture of the ArcGIS framework. GIS-to-SIM’s powerful, easy-to-use API, backed by expert technical support, reduces the risk, cost, and time necessary to enable ArcGIS-based applications to be fully DIS- or HLA-compliant to visualize simulated data.
MÄK GIS-to-SIM provides an ideal foundation for development of ArcGIS-based simulation or operational applications. It enables bi-directional communication between your ArcGIS application and DIS or HLA. With GIS-to-SIM you can also visualize real-time data as rapidly updating symbology within an ArcMap®, or as dynamic 3D models within ArcGlobe®.
GIS-to-SIM saves development dollars by providing a single documented programming interface that abstracts away details of DIS or HLA networking. The interface, comprised of underlying ArcObjects, seamlessly integrates with other ArcGIS Engine components. These components supply the building blocks to provide native support for the simulation interoperability standards. They enable visualization of simulated objects and interactions while providing higher-level GUI components for viewing and configuring simulation-specific functionality.
MÄK GIS-to-SIM functionality can be accessed in three ways:
- As ArcObjects available for use with other ArcGIS Engine components
- As an extension toolbar for ArcMap
- As an extension toolbar for ArcGlobe
