MÄK TECHNOLOGIES WINS CONTRACT TO DEVELOP "SMART TERRAIN"
MÄK to Add Semantic Information to Terrain Databases to Help Develop Higher Fidelity Behavior Models
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., August 14, 2006 ―MÄK Technologies, the world’s leading supplier of distributed simulation software, has been awarded a Phase II SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) contract by the US Army’s Soldier Systems Center and RDECOM to develop a method for adding semantic information to terrain databases for use in the Infantry Warrior Simulation (IWARS) constructive simulation. The additions include both outdoor features, such as cover and concealment, and interior features for MOUT. MÄK will work with TerraSim, a subcontractor on the project, who will be assisting in adding semantic information to urban environments.
"This is the first step in developing higher fidelity behavior models that can more easily reason about the terrain," said Warren Katz, MÄK’s chief operating officer. "Under the contract, we are leveraging already available COTS tools from various vendors, allowing us to avoid costly replication and speed our development."
This Phase II contract builds on MÄK’s Phase I award which included research and evaluation of available terrain tools to use in the process. The tools chosen include ESRI’s ArcInfo, Terrasim’s TerraTools, and 3D Studio Max.
MÄK’s research & development efforts under SBIR contracts have resulted in the development of many commercial products, including MÄK’s flagship product VR-Link and most recently the StealthXR add-on module, as well as numerous product enhancements.
